The Human Resources Department of the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB) has officially launched TrainLab, an application designed to spark the next generation of train drivers.
Employee attraction
After having recruited more than 1.200 collaborators in 2021, the SNCB is still looking for 1.300 new collaborators this year. Facing this recruitment imperative, the company has launched a communication campaign focusing on the working environment of its employees.
What better way to give an insight into the day-to-day working environment of a train driver than to create an app that immerses its users in a driving cabin, and lets them drive the train? That is, at any rate, the idea behind SNCB’s TrainLab.
Micro Simulator available on all platforms
Transurb has reproduced the 3D environment of a Desiro train and created a scenario of a typical driver’s task: start the train, drive towards the next station, and open the train’s doors to let passengers in.
This scenario can be accessed via smartphone, tablet or computer, which makes this marketing app easily accessible by everyone in Belgium.
The app has also been gamified to further engage and motivate. The user for instance has to keep an eye on energy consumption and speed and has to respect an imposed schedule with departure and arrival times.
Attract, train, and retain talents
SNCB’s app is a representative example of the many possibilities offered by TrainLab, from the teaching of theory to the training of practice.
We know that more than 70% of manufacturers currently have major difficulties in attracting and retaining workers, and we expect significant job shortages by 2030 in the industry. Now is the moment to address this issue and anticipate future challenges by retaining knowledge, digitalising training and reskilling workers.
