SWEDEN’S SJ EXPANDS TRAIN SIMULATOR FLEET TO DELIVER CONSISTENT AND SCALABLE DRIVER TRAINING

After a first delivery of three Nano simulators, Sweden’s national operator STATENS JÄRNVÄGAR (SJ) has now expanded its fleet to eight deployable training systems, reinforcing its ability to provide consistent, high-quality driver training across different regions.

A scalable solution for consistent training

To maintain a high, uniform standard of driver training across its operations, SJ selected Transurb’s Nano Simulator, a scalable system designed to adapt to diverse training environments and requirements.

The simulators combine realistic train dynamics, advanced visual immersion, and customisable Clip & Ready control panels, allowing SJ to align each simulator with their procedures.

A configurable environment designed for autonomy

Each simulator is delivered with a generic training track, not tied to any real-world route, which provides a flexible base for safety-focused exercises. Using the integrated Track Editor Tool (TET) and Module Editor Tool (MET), SJ’s instructors can easily adapt the track layout and signalling to build targeted scenarios, whether for

  • specific procedures
  • unusual operating conditions
  • or evolving training needs

This allows teams to maintain control over the training content and adjust it independently, without relying on external support.

Focused on safety system training

Each simulator includes a simulation of the Swedish ATC system, allowing SJ to build exercises around national safety procedures.

Instructors can introduce variations such as a missing signal input, a speed restriction appearing unexpectedly, or a temporary loss of supervision.

  • A missing signal input
  • An unexpected speed restriction
  • Temporary loss of supervision

These scenarios help prepare drivers to respond appropriately when standard conditions are disrupted. This flexibility ensures that safety-related behaviours can be trained and assessed under a wide range of situations.

Investing in long-term readiness

This latest delivery supports SJ’s broader training strategy: combining consistency, flexibility and autonomy. This latest delivery supports SJ’s broader training strategy, combining:

  • Consistency across training locations
  • Flexibility to address diverse needs
  • Autonomy over tools and content

By expanding its simulator fleet, SJ is reinforcing its capacity to provide high-quality training, while remaining fully in control of the tools and content. Transurb is pleased to continue supporting SJ in the development of its training ecosystem and thanks the team for the constructive and trust-based collaboration.

Got questions?

Here are some quick answers to help you learn more about our simulators and how they support effective, flexible training.

Nano simulators are compact, portable driving simulators designed to offer full training capabilities in a simplified format. They are ideal for decentralised, quick-deployment training environments.

The Track Editor Tool (TET) is a built-in feature that allows instructors to create and customise virtual railway environments within the simulator. Using TET, SJ’s training teams can build track layouts from scratch, configure signalling, and design tailored scenarios focused on safety and operations. This flexibility enables full control over training content without needing external technical support.

Transurb combined strong signalling expertise (with references in Swedish ATC, ETCS, and other Scandinavian systems) and powerful tools like R³, TET, and MET, giving SJ full autonomy to design and adapt training scenarios.

Their deployable format allows SJ to bring realistic training closer to operational sites. Instructors can create targeted scenarios replicating unusual or degraded conditions, such as unexpected speed restrictions or missing signal inputs, helping drivers prepare for safety-critical situations.

Instructors can supervise multiple simulators simultaneously, communicate with drivers in real time, and review detailed logs and debriefing reports after each session.
