EMD SD40 and EMD GT46AC Simulators with VR delivered to Setrag in Gabon

End of May, Transurb Simulation training solution was put into service by SETRAG, the operating company of the Trans-Gabon Railway and subsidiary of COMILOG. In parallel, the inauguration of the Tamar and Lilian Training Center with the Gabonese Ministry of Transport took place.

Since then, the driving trainees of SETRAG and their instructors are benefiting of brand-new Compact simulators and Nano Simulators. First of their kind, those simulators have Virtual Reality (VR) integrated in order to address faults and defects diagnostic and resolution. The VR will train students in an immersive environment, even when their actions belong outside of the (simulator) cab.

A Complete Training Solution for Setrag

The simulation solution will introduce trainees to normal and degraded mode conditions in a safe and stress-free environment. This new investment of SETRAG demonstrates its commitment to the well-being, education and safety of its employees and to the improvement of the Gabonese railway transport in general.

As part of the new SETRAG training strategy, the two new Compact Simulators will familiarize trainees to the operation of the EMD SD40 and EMD GT46AC locomotives. On top of that, the Nano Simulators will give SETRAG teams the opportunity to be mobile and provide “on-site” training to trainees.

In the Compact Simulators, the VR add-on will enable troubleshooting and out-of-cab procedures. The operations director at SETRAG, Claude Kontcho, explains:

The VR solution is a real added value to our simulation equipment […]. The immersive environment enabled by this technology allows creating the right context and various situations for the learner. We are very happy with the 3D rendering and are convinced that our learners will benefit from it by practising out-of-cab procedures as they would in the real world.

A project ahead of its time

This project has been very motivating for Transurb since it encompasses the delivery of pioneering technology to the African rail market. Moreover, the realistic freight trains and the 50 km of realistic tracks will offer the possibility to Setrag to learn with the utmost immersive tools.

Co-Creation and Optimized Training Sessions

We want to thank SETRAG for this project and partnership, we are sure that the operator will make the most out of this solution and continue to improve the training experience of its students.
